The best portraits are crafted with good photographic techniques including lighting composition, background choice, but most important of all is your personality.

As our society's attention span atrophies, it has never been more important to have a profile photo that gets the viewer's attention. An average photo will be lost in the shuffle of life.

How to Choose the Best Online Dating Photo

  1. No hats.  Especially to hide a balding head.  It is best to own it.
  2. Use a full-length photo. So viewers can get a realistic look at you.
  3. Have a passion, hobby, or sport you love?  Show it in your photos.
  4. Like to travel? Show off a vacation photo.
  5. Get away from selfies.  Instead, post a candid shot of you laughing.
  6. Focus on your personality.  If your serious, show serious, if you're a comedian show laughing.
  7. No shades. The eyes are the gateway to the soul.

How do you choose pictures for online dating?

Here are three factors to consider when selecting the photos for your dating profile, plus a bonus technique.

AUTHENTIC

  • When choosing online dating photos it is important to ask yourself if the image feels authentic.  If the photo looks too produced or contrived I recommend eliminating it.  Pick images that look natural.

FLATTERING

  • It goes without saying that your portraits need to show you in your best light.  The best profile images will also show an aspect of your personality.

YOUR STORY

  • The most often missed photos of dating profiles are images that tell your story. You should always include images that show what your passions are.  The most popular are sports or philanthropy.

And don't forget variety!

Put yourself in the shoes of the searcher looking at your profile. You want to give them something special to look at.  A great technique is creating a variety of different-looking images.

An example of variety is starting your profile with a close-up shot of your face in a blue shirt with a green background.  The next photo is a full-length image of you in a black suit walking in front of a red brick wall.  Followed by a 3/4 length photo wearing a red jacket in front of a different background.

The idea is to draw contrasts between each image the user views to add visual interest and make you stand out.

Online Dating Profile Photo Tips

Popular online dating sites like JDate, Bumble, and Zoosk all have profiles with photos and text. Your objective on these sites is to get interested parties to read the text and get to know you.

The number one way of doing this is by having a kick-ass photo of yourself. Studies show that the first thing people see is your profile photo.

From there, if they like it they will go on to read the text in your profile. Without a photo your profile will most likely get passed up. Someone looking might be afraid you are hiding something if they don't see any pictures. Below we talk about the best online dating profile photo tips.

Tip 1: Be honest with the way you look

  • Put the sunglasses away. Show your eyes. People want to see your eyes.
  • Show your whole face. No hiding.
  • Avoid Snapchat filters.
  • Ditch the hat. Better to own the bald spot than be sneaky. Be truthful about how you look.
  • Always include a full body picture. Show the whole you.
  • Pick clothes that flatter you.

Tip 2: Don’t use a photo from your smartphone.

  • Avoid selfies. They distort your face in an unflattering way.
  • Smartphone photos send a message that you are not putting any effort into your profile.
  • If you must use your smartphone have a friend take the photos from further away than an arm's length.

Tip 3: Hire a professional photographer to take your photos

  • Professional photos are just better. Better quality, lighting, and posing.
  • A photographer with experience will help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
  • Professional posing & coaching always makes more authentic photos.
  • An artist will know what elements are needed to create memorable images.
